Commissions |
It is always a privilege to receive commissions, be it portraits or requests for specific locations; cherished views, your home, your pets, etc. However, because of the very personal nature of the subject matter, many people have preconceived ideas of the finished product and this can often be a problem to an artist. Should the artist execute the work in his ‘style’ or produce something more photographic and ultimately safer but risk losing that very style for which he was probably asked to create the work in the first place? I guess a good old ‘British compromise’ comes a little into play here and below is a collage of some details of commissions I’ve undertaken showing, I hope, realistic images and accurate portraits but without any loss of my characteristic ‘style’. When creating a commission, it really is essential to have as much reference material as possible. That small photograph hurriedly grabbed at a family gathering or the shot taken of your house on a rainy day is regrettably of little use, so where possible, I need to visit the location or meet the subject of the portrait in order to ‘get to know’ my subject. Don’t worry however if a visit is not possible as I will guide you through the type of reference shots that I need.
