It is always a privilege to receive commissions, be it portraits or requests for specific locations; cherished views, your home, etc. However, because of the very personal nature of the subject matter, many people have preconceived ideas of the finished product and this often can be a problem to an artist. Does the artist execute the work in his "style" or go for something more photographic and ultimately more safe but risk losing that very style for which he was probably asked to create the work in the first place? I guess the good old "British Compromise" comes a little into play here and below are some samples showing, I hope, realistic views and accurate portraits but without any loss of the character which is essentially my "style".

When creating a commission, it really is essential to have as much reference material as possible. The small photograph hurredly grabbed at a family gathering or the shot taken of your house on a rainy day is regrettably of little use and so where possible I need to visit the location or meet the subject of the portrait in order to "get to know " my subject. Don't worry, hovever, if a visit is not possible as I will guide you through the type of reference photographs that I need.
